What decides whether it lasts
Moisture is the other half of it
Concrete is not waterproof. On a slab poured without a vapor barrier, or one sitting against damp ground, water vapor moves up through the pores continuously. Put a sealed coating over that and the vapor has nowhere to go, so it collects underneath and pushes the coating off in sheets. This is why a below-grade floor gets tested with a calcium chloride kit or a relative humidity probe before anyone quotes it, and why the honest answer is sometimes a mitigating primer first.
Why the grinder decides everything
Almost every failed garage floor starts the same way: a coating rolled onto concrete that was never opened up. A trowelled slab has a tight, closed surface, and resin sitting on top of it has nothing to grip. Diamond grinding cuts that skin away and leaves a profile like fine sandpaper, which is what a coating actually bonds into. It is the loudest, dirtiest and least glamorous day of the job, and it is the one that decides whether the floor is still tight in ten years.
If a grind and seal will serve your room better than a full flake system, that is what you will be told, even though it is the smaller job. The same goes for timing: a slab poured last month is not ready, and coating green concrete is one of the few genuinely unfixable mistakes in this trade. Waiting a few weeks costs nothing; getting it wrong costs the whole floor.
