Anniston’s concrete floor coatings

Flake, metallic, quartz, polished and sealed floors for Anniston homes and businesses. Anniston is home, so this is the shortest drive there is.

What Shanks coats in Anniston

The work in town splits fairly evenly between garage floors and covered porches, with the occasional shop floor for someone running a business from home. Anniston is home, so this is the shortest drive there is.

A lot of Calhoun County housing went up between the fifties and the eighties around the Army depot and the mills, which means hard-trowelled slabs with a tight, closed surface. They look fine and they reject a coating unless they are properly ground, which is exactly why so many store-bought garage kits in this county peeled inside a year.

Whatever the slab turns out to be, the order of work does not change: grind it open, repair what is broken, then coat it. The twenty-two systems Shanks installs all sit on top of that same preparation.

Systems Anniston homeowners ask for

Gabled carport at dusk with the Shanks trailer parked at the far end

Garage Floor Epoxy

Ground, patched and coated so hot tires and dropped tools do not mark it.

Grey and white flake floor on a covered patio with a stone fireplace

Flake Epoxy

Vinyl chip in a pigmented base under clear. The most requested floor here.

Silver and charcoal metallic floor swirling across a finished grey room

Metallic Epoxy

Pearl pigment moved through resin so the floor reads like poured stone.

Grind and Seal

The concrete you already own, opened up, stained if you want, and sealed.

Patio Coatings

Textured, UV-stable finishes for porches, patios and pool surrounds.

Commercial Epoxy

Shop, warehouse and showroom floors specified for the actual use.

What decides whether it lasts

Moisture is the other half of it

Concrete is not waterproof. On a slab poured without a vapor barrier, or one sitting against damp ground, water vapor moves up through the pores continuously. Put a sealed coating over that and the vapor has nowhere to go, so it collects underneath and pushes the coating off in sheets. This is why a below-grade floor gets tested with a calcium chloride kit or a relative humidity probe before anyone quotes it, and why the honest answer is sometimes a mitigating primer first.

Why the topcoat matters more than the base

The layer you actually walk on, wash and scuff is the clear coat, not the color underneath. A cheap job leaves a standard epoxy as the top layer, and epoxy ambers in daylight, so a garage with a west-facing door turns yellow within a couple of years. A UV-stable polyaspartic or aliphatic urethane holds its color, cures fast enough to walk on the next day, and can be scuffed and recoated years later without disturbing what is underneath.

Anyone who quotes a concrete floor sight unseen is guessing, because the condition of the slab is most of the cost. Two garages of identical size can be a full day apart in preparation once you factor in old paint, glue, cracking and how much of the surface has broken down. Taylor looks at the floor, measures it, tells you what it needs, and then puts a real number in writing.

The owner does the work

You deal with the owner from the first phone call to the walk-through at the end. Nobody sells you a floor and then disappears. Taylor Shanks trained with Brian Phillips, The Epoxy Dude, in southern Indiana, and he and Heather have run Shanks Concrete Coatings since 2025. Licensed and insured, Alabama #2602341.

If the honest answer for your Anniston floor is a cheaper system than the one you called about, that is what you will be told. More about how Shanks works.

Which floor for which room

If you are trying to work out which floor you want before anyone comes out, this is the short version:

You like the concrete you already have

Grind and seal. The slab is opened up, optionally stained, and sealed. It costs less than a full coating system, it keeps the character of the concrete, and on a stamped patio or an older shop floor it is very often the better-looking answer.

It is outside

A textured patio coating with a UV-stable topcoat. Color choice matters more outdoors than anywhere else, because a dark smooth surface around a pool gets hot enough to be unpleasant barefoot in an Alabama July.

The slab is in rough shape

Restoration or a self-leveling overlay before anything decorative. A coating cannot bridge a surface that has broken down; the slab has to be rebuilt flat first, and then it takes any system you like.

You park a vehicle on it

Flake, almost every time. The chip field hides tire marks and dust, the texture stops it being slick when you track rain in, and the polyaspartic topcoat handles hot tires without softening. It is the most requested floor Shanks installs and it is the right call for the large majority of garages.

Anniston questions

Do you actually work in Anniston?

Yes. Anniston is home, so this is the shortest drive there is. Anniston is inside the sixty-mile radius Shanks covers out of Anniston, and it is quoted at the same rate as a job in town.

How long will my floor take?

About three to four days for a standard two-car garage: grinding, repair and base coat, broadcast and scrape, then the topcoat. Bigger or more damaged floors take longer, and Taylor will give you the real schedule before starting.

Can you coat a basement here?

Often yes, but below-grade slabs get moisture-tested first. Vapor coming up through concrete will push a coating off no matter how good the prep was, so it is measured rather than assumed.

Will you look at it before quoting?

Always. The condition of the slab is most of the price, so a number over the phone would be a guess. Taylor looks at the floor, then gives you a real number in writing.

What is the most popular floor around here?

Flake, by a distance. It hides dust and tire marks, it is not slick when wet, and it suits both a garage and a finished basement.
