Covered porch coatings for Oneonta homes
About half of what Taylor coats in Oneonta is covered porches, the slab you cross every day and sit on most evenings. A textured build under a UV-stable topcoat keeps it grippy when rain blows in and holds its color where the sun reaches the front edge.
Getting a porch ready to take a coating
A covered porch looks sheltered, yet its outer few feet catch rain and afternoon sun much like an open patio. Before anything is mixed, Taylor walks the slab. Blount County concrete varies widely from one house to the next, so that first visit is a genuine inspection. After it, the work always runs in this order.
Strip it back to clean concrete
Outdoor slabs collect mildew, efflorescence and whatever sealer somebody rolled on years back. All of it comes off, and a diamond grinder opens the surface so the new build has a profile to grip. Coating over a dirty porch is how a finish starts lifting at the edges.
Rebuild the edge and the step
The front edge of a porch and the step down to the lawn take the most abuse. Chipped nosings, spalled corners and open control joints get rebuilt and ground flush, so water has nowhere to sit and the coating has a clean line to wrap. It is slow, careful work, and it decides whether the porch looks finished or patched.
Texture first, then the UV coat
A broadcast or knock-down texture goes into the build so wet shoes do not skate. The last coat is UV-stable, because the strip of porch that sees direct sun will amber and fade under a standard epoxy. Foot traffic comes back the next day and furniture at about three days.
When a stamped porch only needs sealing
Some porches should not be coated at all. A stamped porch like this wood-plank one, stained brown and sealed, already has the look most people want from their concrete, and a flake system laid over it would bury the pattern. When the stamping is intact and only the color has washed out, the better job is a thorough clean, fresh stain where it has faded, and a new coat of sealer.
That is a smaller job than a full coating, and Taylor will tell you so on the first visit. The detail on that route, including the signs an exterior sealer is due, is on the Oneonta concrete sealing page. If your porch is plain gray concrete, or the stamping has cracked and spalled past saving, a textured coating over a repaired slab is the stronger answer, and the whole system is laid out on the patio coatings page.

Sun on the rim, rain on the steps
A covered porch is shaded in the middle and exposed at the rim. Sun reaches in across the front edge for part of every day, and that strip is where a cheap topcoat yellows first. Rain blows in on the same strip and runs toward the step. The slab is poured to fall gently toward the yard so water leaves, and the coating is built to keep that slope.
Color gets chosen in daylight, standing on the porch, against the brick or siding beside it. Lighter tones stay cooler underfoot, which matters on a porch where people walk barefoot in summer. Texture is picked with the same eye: enough grip for a wet boot, smooth enough to sweep. If the porch is ready for it, send Taylor the details and he will set a time to come and look.
Taylor has a lot of knowledge and he is very good at what he’s doing. We absolutely love our new front and back porch! Thank you Shanks Concrete Coating!!!! We will be getting our pool deck coated in the spring.

Two things to settle before coating day
The drive out from Anniston is never what holds a porch job up. These two things can, and both go easier with a little notice. Finished floors are in the gallery if you want to see textures first, and Taylor’s number is (256) 365-6535.
The forecast
Resin cures inside a temperature and dew point window, and an outdoor slab feels every swing in the weather. If rain or a cold snap is coming, the job moves. A porch coated into bad weather can cloud over or lose its grip on the concrete, and no calendar is worth redoing a floor for.
A clear slab
Chairs, grills, planters and the doormat all come off. Anything that has stood in one spot for years usually leaves a ring or a rust mark, and those get treated during prep. On a porch that doubles as a carport, the vehicle lives somewhere else until the coating has fully cured. Taylor gives you the dates when you book the first look.

Porch coating questions from Oneonta
Will a coated porch be slippery when it rains?
Not with the right texture. Taylor broadcasts aggregate or uses a knock-down finish in the build, so a wet shoe has something to grip. How much texture is a trade between grip and how easily the porch sweeps clean, and it gets settled on site before anything is mixed.
Does a covered porch really need a UV-stable topcoat?
Yes. The roof shades the middle of the slab, but low sun still lands on the front few feet for part of the day. A standard epoxy left on top ambers and fades there first, which leaves a stripe along the edge. A UV-stable topcoat keeps the whole porch one color.
Can you coat over my stamped porch?
Yes, though it is often the wrong move. If the pattern is intact and only the stain has faded, cleaning, restaining and sealing keeps the look and costs less. If the stamping has cracked or spalled badly, a textured coating over a repaired slab is the better answer, and Taylor will tell you which.
How soon can we use the porch again?
Foot traffic is fine the next day. Furniture and grills go back at about three days, and the coating reaches full cure over the following week. If the porch doubles as a carport, the vehicle stays off until that full cure, and Taylor gives you the date before the job starts.
Do you charge extra to come out to Oneonta?
No. Oneonta is about 43 miles from the shop in Anniston and inside the sixty-mile radius Shanks covers, so a porch here is priced the same as one in town. The first visit to look at the slab is free anywhere inside that radius, and Oneonta is well within it.
Why does my porch slab slope toward the yard?
It is meant to. Porch slabs are poured with a slight fall away from the house so rain runs off instead of pooling against the wall, and a coating has to keep that fall. If a porch already holds water in a low spot, the drainage gets fixed first, because ponding water wears out any coating early.
A porch worth sitting on again
Send the size of the porch and a word on its condition, and Taylor calls back the same day, usually within working hours.
