What decides whether it lasts
Moisture is the other half of it
Concrete is not waterproof. On a slab poured without a vapor barrier, or one sitting against damp ground, water vapor moves up through the pores continuously. Put a sealed coating over that and the vapor has nowhere to go, so it collects underneath and pushes the coating off in sheets. This is why a below-grade floor gets tested with a calcium chloride kit or a relative humidity probe before anyone quotes it, and why the honest answer is sometimes a mitigating primer first.
What repair actually involves
Cracks get chased out into a V with a saw rather than simply filled, so the repair has shoulders to hold onto, then filled with a rigid polyurea that can be ground flush the same day. Spalled edges near a garage door, where water has sat and frozen for a few winters, are rebuilt with a polymer-modified patch. None of this shows in the finished floor, which is precisely why it gets skipped by people quoting the cheapest number.
If a grind and seal will serve your room better than a full flake system, that is what you will be told, even though it is the smaller job. The same goes for timing: a slab poured last month is not ready, and coating green concrete is one of the few genuinely unfixable mistakes in this trade. Waiting a few weeks costs nothing; getting it wrong costs the whole floor.
